Good luck with your challenge! *** I have finished reading my first book...a holdover from last year called Severed Souls by Terry Goodkind, the latest book in his Sword of Truth series. My friend got me into the series and I have mixed feelings about it. The series goes up and down and I am stubborn and I will read every last book in the series. With that being said, I was impressed with this one. I felt that the past couple of books in this series were not as good as earlier books but after reading this one I am excited for the next one that is coming out this year.

Just finished the 2nd book Alice: I Have Been by Melanie Benjamin. The only reason why I picked up this book was because it said Alice and a partial picture of Alice in Wonderland. It is a heartbreaking story of the life of Alice Liddell, the inspiration behind Alice in Wonderland and Charles Dodgson better known as Lewis Carroll. I did not know too much about Alice Liddell but she had quite the life full of joy and such heartbreak. I would recommend this one.

I just finished the last book in Ken Follet's Century Trilogy Edge of Eternity a five year journey, the first book taking place during World War 1 and the fall the monarchies of old, then to World War 2 and its aftermath, to finally Vietnam and the Cold War. I loved how this followed the same families as they navigated through history. Any history lover will enjoy this series.

Book number 4 is The Orchid House by Lucinda Riley. The journey of Julia Forrester as she learns the truth about her past and dealing with a tragedy of her own. I thought that the book was ok. The beginning was brilliant but it took a long time for it to get going. Once it did the story was not too bad. I enjoyed the ending though.

The book was short but she wove a tale of a young man from Hong Kong, traveling to Japan to stay at his family's home in Japan. As he recover he uncovers secrets that would will forever change him. |

Book number 6 is complete! The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway. I had always heard good things about Hemingway but never found the time to read any of his books. The book was a quick read and I did not think it was too bad.

Number 7 is done A Flame of Pure Fire: Jack Dempsey and the Roaring '20s by Roger Kahn. A co worker and I like talking sports and books and he suggested this one about his favorite boxer Jack Dempsey. All I really knew about Dempsey was that he used to have a restaurant on Broadway which was featured briefly in The Godfather movie. The book was very fascinating. It focused on his amazing life plus all of the historical events happening in 20s.

Fell behind for various reasons but book 8 is finally done. The Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemingway. The book was ok. I thought it would be better. It started out great but it slowed down a bit in the middle. Towards the end it did get better. I preferred The Old Man and the Sea over this one.

The 9th book was finished this morning In Her Name: First Contact by Michael R. Hicks. A very good book and I looking forward to continuing with this series. Humans come in contact with an ancient race, who for them the battle is everything.
